In the Spring of 2013 the directors of Fishes and Loaves held discussions regarding the problem with our limited amount of freezer space versus the amount of frozen food we receive, or could receive, from MANNA. The solution, a walk-in freezer and cooler, was a dream which seemed out of reach for us. Then we received the letter inviting us to apply for a grant under the “Keeping It Cool” initiative. We applied and were blessed to receive a total of $3,533.33 for this initiative. This seemed like a message from above to go for it. With this grant, and additional support from individuals, churches, and golf tournaments, we were able to raise enough money to make the refrigeration unit, at $27,000, and a building addition to house it, at $11,000, a reality.
The finishing touches have just been completed. The cooler and freezer units, each 8 x 12, fit beautifully into the 240-square-foot building addition. This increased capacity allows us to take full advantage of all free frozen food available from MANNA, as well as allowing us to purchase discounted frozen meat from MANNA. Fresh fruits and vegetables, and bread, keep much better in the new cooler.
Attached are pictures of some of the directors alongside our refrigeration units and carts with vegetables, fruit and bread ready for distribution.
Thank you for helping us improve our facility to better serve our clients.
